Get involved
Kentucky Experience project wants you!
We experience the place where we live depending on who we are. We may all live in the same state, but we could feel very differently about that state depending on our age, race, class, sexual orientation, gender identity, ethnicity, religion, history, personal experiences, what city/region we live in, whether we were born here or not, etc.
This project was started in hopes to better understand Kentucky’s diverse population, to begin an honest dialogue about our differences, our similarities, our disappointments and our expectations, and finally to create a culture of respect based on shared stories and artistic expression.
Please contribute by creating artwork, music, video, poetry, shorts stories etc. that reflect your relationship with Kentucky.
Not sure where to start? Some possible things to think about are:
- are you a native Kentuckian or a transplant?
- As a person of color what has it been like for you to live in Kentucky?
- What is like living in Kentucky as a Muslim? a Christian? an Atheist?
- Do you think that a person’s social class can affect the way they experience Kentucky? If so how?
- What is like to be homeless in Kentucky?
- What is your experience with being incarcerated in Kentucky?
- How does it feel to be gay, lesbian or transgendered in Kentucky?
- What is like living in Louisville or Paducah or Whitesburg KY?
- Are you vegetarian of vegan? How has that been?
- Are you involved in Kentucky politics? What has that experience been like?
- Are you a student? What year? What is it like going to school in Kentucky?
These are only a few examples, the possibilities are endless. Feel free to also submit pieces that deal w/ multiple categories, i.e. “What it’s like the be a black gay republican college student in Kentucky” The only requirement is that your piece is an expression of your relationship with Kentucky, the good, and the not so good.
All forms of creative expression are welcome and encouraged. Submissions can be completely visual, only words, or a combination. Possibilities include photos, drawings, poetry, music, video, stories, spoken word.
Submissions will be showcased on this website, with the possibility of later being part of a printed publication and/or traveling exhibition.
